Japanese Numbers

Skill Levels: Never learned, Beginner

It is a little confusing how to count numbers in Japanese since there are more than one way to count.

かず(kazu), Numbers:

1: いち (ichi)
2: に (ni)
3: さん (san)
4: し (shi) or よん (yon)
5: ご (go)
6: ろく (roku)
7: しち (shichi) or なな (nana)
8: はち (hachi)
9: く (ku) or きゅう (kyuu)
10: じゅう (juu)

<Counting Up>

1(ichi)-2(ni)-3(san)-4(shi)-5(go)-6(roku)-7(shichi)-8(hachi)-9(ku or kyuu)-10 (juu)

* There are more variations: ... go-roku-nana-hachi-ku-juu, depending on where you live in Japan.

* 7 "shichi" is often pronounced "hichi" when spoken.

*Some children's TV shows teach kids to count:
1(ichi)-2(ni)-3(san)-4(yon)-5(go)-6(roku)-7(nana)-8(hachi)-9(kyuu)-10 (juu)

The Classic Way:

1(ひ, hi)-2(ふ, fu)-3(み, mi)-4(よ,yo)-5(いつ,itsu)-6(む,mu)-7(なな,nana)-8(や,ya)-9(ここ,koko)-10(とお,too)

* I personally pronounce it this way: " ひい(hii)-ふう(fuu)-みい(mii)-よう(yoo)-いつ(itsu)-むう(muu)-なな(nana)-やあ(yaa)-ここ(koko)-とお(too)

* とお(too)---> Don't get confused with English "too." The pronunciation is close to "tow" in English.

<Counting Down>

You don't use "shi," "shichi," or "ku" when you count down.
10(juu)- 9(kyuu)-8(hachi)-7(nana)-6(roku)-5 (go)-4 (yon)-3(san)-2(ni)-1 (ichi)
