こどもの日 (こどものひ)
Children's Day (May 5th) is an annual Japanese holiday for both boys and girls. Until recently (1948), however, only boys celebrated on this day. Girls celebrated and still do on March 3rd. Traditionally, this Boys' Day was called 端午の節句 (Tango no sekku.) They often display kabuto (a samurai helmet) at home and colorful carp-shaped Koinobori streamers outside houses, usually above the roofs.
